North America was seen as a market that would grow for bidet and washlet toilet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure that the future generations could read them. Many words were substituted with foreign ones. For instance, dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was being used.

Origins

The company was founded in 1917 and its early years mirrored Japan's economic development. In the early years of its existence, the company manufactured products to meet the demand for new, modern urban housing. To achieve this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the nation that produced ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which helps to increase efficiency and a more consistent production.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began expanding outwards to profit from sales and new markets. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other manufacturers' products in order to enhance its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and expanded the firm's market share in the world.

In the 90s, Toto began focusing on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and boost profits. The company also employed the approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This led to a higher level customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to develop toilet technology. The latest toilet, for instance, has an extremely powerful tornado flush that is more ecologically green than traditional toilets. The company makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets Toto produces bathtubs and faucets, as well as hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than typical models.

The company's first museum opened in the year 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's most iconic products and their development as well as its group companies (all that deal with ceramics) and the historical background of plumbing and products like bath units, and in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum even includes a bathroom with a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.

Before the formation of Toto, members of the group performed sessions for many musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia one would think that the group would be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock group. The band was initially four-piece, and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a massive blockbuster, but it was not without its issues. Record companies placed the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us a hit record or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on to deliver. Luckily for Toto, they did, with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experiences. Before joining the group, the band members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard of the '80s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album opens with a strong and pounding sound with tracks like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into your mind. However, the album also includes some more mellow, jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song mixes folk and the distorted AOR, which should seem like a complete blunder, but works very well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes changed to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band was through several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The band was able to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour help promote the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to feature any single song that had the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the band. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
