Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, spare Audi key etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this.
