Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

For instance the DCT cannot account for cultural and individual variations in communication. Furthermore it is also the case that the DCT is prone to bias and can result in overgeneralizations. It is essential to analyze it carefully before it is used for research or evaluation.

Despite its limitations, the DCT is a useful tool to study the relationship between prosody and information structure in non-native speakers. Its ability to manipulate the social variables that are relevant to politeness in two or more steps could be a benefit. This ability can be used to study the impact of prosody in various cultural contexts.

In the field of linguistics, DCT is among the most effective tools used to analyze the communication habits of learners. It can be used to investigate a variety of issues that include the manner of speaking, turn taking and lexical choice. It can also be used to assess the phonological complexity of learners speaking.

Recent research has used an DCT as tool to evaluate the refusal skills of EFL students. Participants were presented with a variety of scenarios to choose from and then asked to select the appropriate response. The authors found the DCT to be more efficient than other methods of refusal, such as videos or questionnaires. Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)

This study looked at Chinese learners making pragmatic choices when using Korean. Participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate proficiency who gave responses to MQs and DCTs. They were also required to provide reflections on their opinions and refusals in RIs. The MQ data was first analyzed to determine the participants' practical choices. The data was categorized according Ishihara (2010)'s definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, the responses were matched with their linguistic performance in DCTs to determine if they showed a pattern of resistance to pragmatics or not. Interviewees also had to explain why they chose a pragmatic behavior in certain situations.

The findings of the MQs and DCTs were then examined using descriptive statistics and Z-tests. The CLKs were found to use euphemistic words like "sorry" or "thank you". This was probably due to their lack of familiarity with the target languages, which led to an insufficient understanding of korean pragmatic norms. The results showed that CLKs' preferences to differ from L1 and L2 norms or to be more convergent towards L1 varied depending on the DCT situations. The RIs revealed that CLKs knew about their practical resistance to each DCT situation. The RIs were conducted one-to-one basis within a period of two days of participants having completed the MQs. The RIs were recorded and transcribed by two coders who were independent who then coded them. The coding was an iterative process, in which the coders read and discussed each transcript. The results of coding are evaluated against the original RI transcripts to determine whether they reflected the actual behavior.

Interviews for refusal

The key question in pragmatic research is: Why do some learners refuse to accept native-speaker norms? A recent study sought to answer this question by employing a range of experimental tools, including DCTs, MQs, and RIs. The participants were comprised of 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs, and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. They were asked to perform the DCTs in their first language and complete the MQs in either their L1 or L2. They were then invited to an RI where they were asked to reflect on and discuss their responses to each DCT situation.

The results showed that on average, the CLKs rejected native-speaker pragmatic norms in over 40% of their responses. They did this even when they were able to create patterns that closely resembled native speakers. They were aware of their practical resistance. They attributed their choice to learner-internal factors such as their personalities and multilingual identities. They also referred to external factors, like relational benefits. They also discussed, for instance, how their relationships with their professors allowed them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and 프라그마틱 환수율 social standards of their university.

However, the interviewees also expressed concern about the social pressures and consequences that they might face if they flouted their social norms. They were worried that their local friends might think they are "foreigners" and believe they are unintelligent. This concern was similar to those voiced by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

These results suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are no longer the norm for Korean learners. They may remain useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. But it is advisable for future researchers to reassess their usefulness in particular situations and in different cultural contexts. This will help them better understand the effect of different cultural environments on the classroom behavior and interactions of students from L2.
